What we’re drinking this week: Domaine d’Ardhuy “Les Clos du Roi” Corton Grand Cru 2018🍷

We knew we were in for a treat when this one came out of the bottle at our recent Burgundy tasting, hosted by @elliotomara of @abswines…but even we were surprised at how strongly it won the room over.

It’s a more pricey wine than usual, making it perfect for special occasions, and this wine proved on the night that the investment is worth it.

In the glass, it pours a deep cherry-ruby, immediately signalling depth and complexity. On the nose, there’s rich aromas: black cherry, plum, and strawberry layered with eucalyptus, mocha, tobacco and a hint of toast. There’s also a whisper of roasted notes that hint at the wine’s aging potential.

The palate is just as compelling: dense yet elegant, with a vibrant freshness. Velvety tannins support a core of black fruit, lifted by roasted coffee and smoky undertones.

This is a wine that pairs wonderfully with game, roasted meats, or rich sauces, though we wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to savour it slowly, completely on its own.

This was such a popular wine that all of the 2022 vintage, which we were pouring on the night of the tasting, were bought there and then; however, if you’d like to experience this one for yourself, we have just four bottles of the 2018 vintage in stock - it`s a little older and more complex but still very much worthy of those memorable moments! 🍷

In order to do so, a retailer or establishment must undergo a rigorous selection and training process set by Habanos S.A., the exclusive distributor of Cuban cigars worldwide. And this isn’t just a marketing label; it’s a distinction granted only to those who meet strict standards in product knowledge, customer service and cigar storage conditions. 🥇

At the heart of the certification is education. Specialists must be deeply knowledgeable about the Habanos portfolio, which includes world-renowned brands such as Cohiba, Montecristo, Partagás, Romeo y Julieta and Hoyo de Monterrey. We therefore understand the nuances of each ‘vitola’ (size), blend, strength and aging potential.

Of course, this is important as it ensures that we can recommend the perfect cigar for any palate or occasion, whether you`re a first-time smoker or a seasoned connoisseur.

What a fantastic night exploring one of the world’s most celebrated wine regions! 🍷 From the charm of a Bourgogne Pinot Noir to the elegance of a Corton Grand Cru, guests were taken on a true Burgundian journey, all beautifully paired with regional hors d’oeuvres and great company.

The key takeaway from the evening? While Burgundy is renowned (and often expensive), there are still hidden gems to be found. Seek out the lesser-known names and you’ll uncover exceptional quality.

What an incredible evening we had on Friday, celebrating the world of wine as part of the @brentwoodintlculturalfestival! 🌍🍷🍇
