What a way to spend an afternoon! 🍷 We were delighted to have been invited to the @winemerchantmag Top 100 judging day recently.
Alongside other independent wine merchants, we were invited to blind taste test 150 different wines and score them, in order to create a Top 100 league table for The Wine Merchant Magazine.
We were partnered up with another independent wine merchant - Nish is pictured here with Nichola Nichola Roe of @winetherapy_iow - before we then tasted the wines in two sessions, starting with a morning round in which half of the entries were chosen to go through to the next round in the afternoon.
After lunch, all wines were reflighted and retasted, this time with scores and notes, to create this year’s Top 100 and Highly Commended list for the magazine.
The winners will be announced on the opening day of the @london_wine_fair, and we can`t wait to see what comes out on top!
It`s always an honour to have our expertise recognised, and this is an event that we`ve been lucky enough to enjoy a few times now. Thank you to The Wine Merchant Magazine for having us for a very enjoyable - if somewhat boozy! - day.

Our latest tasting with @missinggatevineyard was a brilliant reminder of just how good English wine is right now. 🍷
Thank you to everyone who joined us last night. We’re sure that you’ll agree that the stand outs of the evening were:
🍇 The Sauvignon Blanc: often compared to the Sancerre of England thanks to its crisp acidity, citrus edge and that classic mineral finish.
🍷 The Pinot Noir: light, fresh and elegant, with bright red fruit and subtle earthiness - very much in the Burgundy style!
🍇 The Chardonnay, which was simply unbelievable, in a good way! Beautifully balanced, with real depth and texture alongside fresh acidity… just a seriously impressive wine.
A huge thank you to Missing Gate for coming to showcase their wonderful wines last night, all of which are produced right here in Essex. Perfect, therefore, for St. George’s Day!

What we`re drinking this week: @pikeswines` Traditionale Riesling.
As things start to feel a bit lighter outside, we naturally find ourselves reaching for fresher, more vibrant whites, and Pike’s Riesling from the Clare Valley, Australia, fits the bill perfectly.
It’s a brilliantly made, consistently reliable Riesling, showing aromas of lime and citrus with a subtle floral note. On the palate, it’s crisp and dry, with a refreshing finish, and you`ll find notes of lime zest, green apple and delicate blossom.
Spot on with grilled fish, prawns, or lighter dishes like asparagus and goat’s cheese, it also pairs really well with fresh, zingy flavours; think Thai salads or Vietnamese herbs.
A great bottle to have on hand as we move into the warmer months - easy to enjoy, but with enough character to keep things interesting. Pop in store to purchase a bottle or two for yourself!

Throwing it back to our latest evening of The Tasting Room Cigar Series... 🔥 Hosted by @mrajrossouw of @brightleafcigar, one of the leading importers of Dominican Republic, Nicaraguan and Honduran cigars in the UK. This was an excellent evening, full of cigar education and mutual appreciation.
This month`s event featured very enjoyable cigars exclusively from @rockypatelcigar, and we`d like to give a huge thank you to everyone that joined us; we hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did!

This beautiful blush rosé is absolutely sunshine in a glass! 😎 A wonderfully fresh rosé, bursting with notes of ripe strawberries, juicy watermelon, and a delicate hint of citrus zest, and produced right here in Essex. Crisp, dry, and effortlessly drinkable; it’s the kind of bottle that disappears quicker than you expect!
