What a delight it was to host a special Sip and Smoke evening last Friday, welcoming guests into our cigar sampling lounge for a curated experience in partnership with @torcigars, with whiskies expertly selected from @lakesdistillery. 🔥🥃
With cigar expert Alfonzo Scherzi joining us at our guest host joining us from Tor, attendees were guided through a thoughtful pairing of premium cigars and beautifully crafted whisky. Cigars and whisky are a classic pairing, and this was an evening designed to explore flavour in a more considered way.
In this instance, two cigars were presented - the E.P. Carrillo Pledge Prequel Robusto and New World Oscuro Navegante Robusto - and they paired beautifully with our chosen whiskies, the Kairos Single Malt and the Signature Single Malt, both from The Lakes Distillery.
In terms of the cigars, the E.P. Carrillo Pledge Prequel Robusto brings notes of rich cedar, toasted oak, espresso, cocoa and gentle spice. The New World Oscuro Navegante Robusto offers a bolder experience, with notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, pepper, earthiness and a rich, full-bodied character.
When paired with the whisky, cigars with deeper notes work wonderfully with The Lakes Distillery Kairos Single Malt, where layers of dried fruit, warming spice, oak influence and subtle sweetness enhance the cigars` flavours. In terms of the Signature Single Malt, the whisky’s smooth oak, vanilla, fruit and spice notes help soften the intensity of a cigar.
Two exceptional cigars and two distinctive single malts: each bringing out the best in the other for a truly memorable evening. Thank you to everyone who joined us. We hope you enjoyed the evening as much as we did, and enjoyed the pairings on offer!

What we’re drinking this week: @danburyridgewine Chardonnay.
To celebrate the start of English Wine Week, we’re turning our attention to one of the brilliant wines of the Crouch Valley: Danbury Ridge Chardonnay.
On a hot midsummer`s weekend, there`s nothing better than a crisp Chardonnay to enjoy in the garden. This is a beautifully elegant English Chardonnay does the job wonderfully: showing bright citrus, orchard fruit and subtle hints of toasted oak, with a lovely balance of freshness and richness.

Shenfield Wine Co. cigar of the week: A.J. Fernandez New World Oscuro Navegante Robusto.
A medium to full-bodied Nicaraguan cigar, the New World Oscuro showcases tobacco from key Nicaraguan tobacco-growing regions. Throwing it back to our Sake Masterclass on Friday! 🍱 Thank you to everyone who attended to learn more about the world of Sake with our host and expert, Helen Wainwright of Marussia Beverages @mbev_uk.
This was a very educational evening, where we busted a lot of the myths surrounding sake. For example, did you know that sparkling sake and a sake liqueur is available? The sparkling sake was a big surprise to all of us, and was thoroughly enjoyed. 🥃
Furthermore, although the traditional pairing is sushi (and this was what we enjoyed with it on Friday!), sake is a more versatile pairing than you may think; for example, it can be paired with and work very well with a cheese course.
Our favourite sake on the night? The Akashi-TaiJunmai Daiginjo Genshu. An elegant, intensely aromatic sake bursting with notes of melon, lemon and bitter orange, layered with delicate floral aromas, subtle herbaceous complexity and a beautifully long, mineral finish. Pair with sashimi, tuna tartare, sea bream carpaccio or grilled white fish to complement its refined citrus character and umami depth.
