Did you know that, despite the name, Oktoberfest doesn`t take place entirely in October? 🇩🇪 Munich’s famous beer festival traditionally starts in September and finishes in early October.
Why is it called Oktoberfest then, we hear you ask?! Well it originally began in October back in 1810, but over the years the celebrations crept forward into September to make the most of the warmer weather.
Which to us just seems like a perfectly sensible reason to start drinking Oktoberfest beer now rather than wait until next week... 😉
So, with Oktoberfest now in full swing and our specialist beers having landed, it’s time to introduce five Bavarian beers we’ve got in store at the moment:
🍺 Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier: bright golden and full-bodied, with rich, bready malt, gentle hop bitterness and a lovely crisp finish. Smooth and dangerously easy to drink!
🍺 Spaten aus München Oktoberfest Bier: a classic Munich Oktoberfest beer, with rounded malt flavours, hints of fresh bread and biscuit, and a clean, gently bitter finish.
🍺 Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Bier: a little richer, with smooth, slightly honeyed malt flavours balanced by a touch of bitterness. One that would be very happy alongside some good German Bratwurst.
🍺 Flötzinger Wies’n Märzen, Rosenheim: malt-forward, smooth and easy drinking, with a mild hop character and a lovely soft finish.
🍺 Löwenbräu München Oktoberfest Bier: pale and bright, with a slightly more robust, spicy character, plenty of malt and aromatic hops keeping everything nicely balanced.
As you can see, not all Oktoberfest beers are the same! Giving you the perfect excuse to try one or fünf, maybe working your way through the lot...Lederhosen optional! 😉

For our next Sip and Smoke on 2nd October, we’ve been fortunate enough to secure an allocation of the highly sought-after Trinidad Topes, giving us the perfect excuse to put together a rather special evening at the @essexcigarcompany Sampling Lounge at Shenfield Wine Co.
Originally released in 2016 as a Habanos Edición Limitada, the Topes quickly became a favourite among cigar aficionados. Its substantial 56 ring gauge was the largest Trinidad had produced at the time, and it certainly made an impression.
Now, following huge demand, the Trinidad Topes is back!
For the evening, we’ll be pairing it with 20YO Santiago de Cuba Cuban Rum, with Tom Lewis of Hunters & Frankau joining us to talk us through the cigar and the pairing. 🥃

We know that we don’t have to love every wine we taste…but we’re always willing to be proved wrong. 🍷When the @winemerchantmag asked the Shenfield Wine Co. team to take a closer look at Greek wine for its latest Tried & Tested feature therefore, it was a good opportunity to revisit a country that hasn’t traditionally featured heavily on our shelves. 🇬🇷
The verdict? A bit of a mixed bag…but there were certainly a few bottles that surprised us, with four making Nish’s final picks as follows:
🇬🇷 Santo Santorini Assyrtiko: fresh and mineral with citrus, stone fruit and that characteristic salty edge. A natural match for grilled fish, seafood or simply prepared Mediterranean dishes.
🇬🇷 Kir-Yianni Xinomavro Rosé: bright and refreshing, with red berry fruit, a little floral character and a crisp, dry finish. Try it with grilled prawns, Greek salads or lighter summer dishes.
🇬🇷 Kir-Yianni Naoussa Cuvée Villages: a classic Xinomavro with red fruit, savoury notes and a touch of spice, balanced by good acidity and structure. This is a wine for lamb, grilled meats or tomato-based dishes.
🇬🇷 Kanakaris Agiorgitiko: soft and approachable, with ripe red and dark fruit, gentle spice and smooth tannins. A good all-rounder for grilled meats, pasta or a mezze spread.
Did it turn us into Greek wine converts overnight? Perhaps not. But that’s the point of a tasting; keeping an open mind and potentially discovering something different, and just occasionally finding a bottle you might not have loved otherwise.

The weather might be turning here, but we managed to hang on to summer for one more evening with our Portuguese Wine Tasting last night. 🇵🇹🍷
And the tasting certainly gave us plenty to talk about...we had a fantastic evening exploring the various wines, with a selection of bottles from across the country paired with Portuguese dishes along the way. Because, as much as we love tasting wine by itself, it’s always interesting to see what happens when you put the right food alongside it!
There were plenty of favourites around the room, but two wines in particular really stood out:
🍇 Milagres Alvarinho by Pinta da Pedra: fresh, crisp and aromatic, with citrus and stone fruit flavours and that lovely mineral freshness you’d expect from Alvarinho.
🍷 Callabriga Douro: a rich, beautifully balanced red, packed with ripe red and black fruit, subtle spice and smooth tannins, leading into a long, elegant finish.
A big thank you to everyone who joined us. Great wine, great food and plenty of conversation around the table…which is pretty much exactly how a Portuguese wine tasting should be.

The Chaveta: a little piece of cigar history... 👇
You might not know its name, but if you’ve ever watched a skilled cigar roller at work, there’s a good chance you’ll have seen one of these.
This is a chaveta, the traditional knife used by cigar makers, or torcedores, to cut and shape tobacco leaves before they become a hand-rolled cigar.
It’s a fairly simple-looking tool, but one that has been part of the cigar-making process for generations. That distinctive broad, curved blade allows the leaves to be cut and shaped with remarkable precision in the hands of someone who knows what they’re doing.
And there’s another little detail we rather like: take a closer look and you’ll spot a small notch in the blade. Traditionally, cigar boxes were often secured with small nails, and this could be used to catch the nail head and help prise it out. Nothing particularly glamorous, just a useful tool designed for the job!
This particular chaveta is a little more special to us, as it was gifted by Hunters & Frankau and carries the words "English Market Selection - EMS." EMS has a long association with Havana cigars supplied to the UK, so as Havana Cigar Specialists, it seems rather fitting to have this little piece of cigar history here at Shenfield Wine Co. 🇨🇺
After all, there’s a lot more to cigars than what eventually ends up in the humidor. Sometimes the story behind the cigar is every bit as fascinating as the cigar itself. 🔥

Twenty years is a long time in retail, and quite a lot can happen along the way. 🍷
Keeping an independent business going for two decades takes a fair bit of determination. There have been busy years and quieter ones, plans that worked and a few that didn’t, plenty of lessons learned, and more than a few challenges that couldn’t possibly have been predicted when we first opened the doors. There have been recessions, rising costs, and even a pandemic! More things than we ever could have imagined when we started out 20 years ago, and more than a few moments over the years that have tested independent businesses like ours.
And yet, here we are...nearly 20 years after Shenfield Wine Co. began, we’re still going strong. 💪
Still independent. Still discovering great bottles. Still enjoying a good debate over what to drink with dinner. And still very much enjoying what we do! 🙌
We’ve learned a lot along the way (you’d hope so after 20 years!), but perhaps one of the biggest lessons is never to take longevity for granted. Reaching this milestone later on this year feels like a genuine achievement for a small independent business, and one we’re incredibly proud of.
As our 20th anniversary approaches, that feels like something worth raising a glass to. 20 years on; still going strong. And still plenty more to come! 🥂
